🕷Meet Spider!
Spider is a gentle soul wrapped in black and white fur, estimated to be 11 months old. This sweet boy is blossoming more every day, slowly learning that human hands can bring love, not harm. Spider has done well with his crate training, potty training, and walking on a leash. He is still learning what he can and cannot chew on. (silly puppies) Currently weighing around 51 lbs, Spider is still gaining much-needed weight and is expected to grow into a large, stunning dog. We believe him to be a Border Collie, Great Pyrenees mix, but we don’t know for sure. With his soft expression and calm presence, he’s well on his way to becoming a loyal, affectionate companion.
Spider was diagnosed with Ehrlichia in October, which is a blood borne disease transmitted through tick bites. Ehrlichia attacks the blood cells and if left untreated can cause neurological issues, hip and joint weakness and sickness. Luckily we caught Spider’s early so he has a high chance of recovering fully.
Though a bit reserved at first, Spider has a warm, kind heart. Once he feels safe, he leans into attention and melts when shown gentle affection. He has a silly soul, always smiling and jumping happily. He is still learning where his legs are and frequently misjudges his body size. :) He is kind and loves to play with other dogs of all sizes. He has been great around cats, usually acting as though they aren’t there. He is great around larger livestock, like horses, as well. He has the potential to make a great livestock guard dog with a little maturity and training. He is well behaved and curious on his outings to stores and the vet. As he continues to gain confidence and strength, his personality shines even brighter.
Spider’s Story | Spider’s journey began at the Wichita Shelter, where he arrived alongside at least four other pups, all believed to be his littermates. Their condition told a heartbreaking story—each was severely underweight, hesitant around people, with fur matted so tightly it was painful. They were also covered in burs, evidence of long neglect and hardship.
Spider was the most fragile of the group. Due to his condition, he was listed as “rescue only,” and that’s when Herding Hearts ResQ stepped in to give him a chance. Weighing in at only 26 lbs when he arrived, he has more than doubled his weight in our care. :)
Since arriving to HHRQ, Spider has received the medical treatment, nutrition, and gentle love he desperately needed. He’s still on his journey to full health, but his spirit gets stronger every day. From frightened and frail to hopeful and loved—Spider is proof that every life deserves a soft place to land.
